Dear colleagues:

We are excited to announce that Release 2 of the 2022 cross-sectional data for the GSS-along with the GSS cumulative cross-sectional file -is now available at gss.norc.org. Currently, the data are available only in SAS and STATA file formats. The GSS Data Explorer is expected to be available with this data the end of November.

Release 2 includes more data that helps us increase our understanding of American society, and updates to issues reported by users. For example, users can now find information on:

  * Expanded religious affiliation and practice.
  * Parental education, occupation, and background.
  * Characteristics of the place where respondents live.
  * Characteristics of people in the home with respondent.
  * New methodological features (i.e., new post-stratification weights covering 1972-2022 and an integrated machine-readable format library to better support user's output for statistical analyses)
  * Improved naming for variables used in web-based experiments.
  * Paradata, including timing and mode by respondent (not part of the cumulative file).

The current release includes variables that took longer to integrate with the rest of the historical data given the complexity of the innovative experimental methodology adopted by the GSS in 2022 (phone, web, and in-person).

To help users assess these differences, we have included notes in our documentation (posted to the website (gss.norc.org<https://gss.norc.org/>)). There, our users can find helpful explanatory information on the potential impact the collection changes may have on the interpretation of the results.

Data from the new release (R2-2022) can be downloaded at https://gss.norc.org/Get-The-Data along with the following important documentation:
· Documentation and Codebook<https://gss.norc.org/Documents/codebook/GSS%202022%20Codebook.pdf>

Sincerely,
René
