Not to self promote too much but ...

I think the most cost effective way to analyze large amounts of text is 
to use a
three step process

1. Figure out how to load the data into an appropriate electronic form; it
sounds like this should be easy for you.

2. use a program with a decent built in and customizable dictionary to produce
word counts that capture the salience categories that suit your 
interests (here
I recommend wordstat, its pretty cheap and efficient, see www.simstat.com)

3. If you want to see relationships between categories, use factor analysis,
like we do in the Political Analysis article "Dimensional Reduction ..."
