The University of Helsinki is among the leading multidisciplinary research
universities in the world. In addition to its 11 faculties, the University of
Helsinki includes several independent institutes, some of which are jointly
operated with other universities. Some 36,000 students are currently pursuing
an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University.

The Department of Social Research (http://www.helsinki.fi/socialresearch/),
Faculty of Social Sciences, is a multidisciplinary unit offering seven
disciplines: social and cultural anthropology, social psychology, social work,
sociology, social statistics, media and communication studies, and social and
public policy. The Department is the largest Finnish unit in its field and is
at the national forefront of research and education in the social sciences. The
Department employs some 200 people, of whom 31 are professors and 26 are
university lecturers. In addition, more than 100 researchers and doctoral
students receiving external funding work at the Department. The number of major
subject students is about 2,300, of whom 400 are pursuing a postgraduate degree.
Each year an average of 200 Bachelor’s degrees, 180 Master’s degrees and 26
doctorates are completed at the Department.

The Department of Social Research, University of Helsinki, invites applications
for the position of

PROFESSOR

The position will be located in the discipline of social and public policy. The
field of the position is social policy and the duties include academic
research, teaching, supervision of postgraduate studies and the examination of
theses and dissertations, as well as heading research projects in the field. In
addition to the present vacancy, the discipline of social and public policy
(http://www.helsinki.fi/socialpolicy/) has six other professorships, one in
each of the following fields: social policy, urban studies, social gerontology,
environmental policy, disability research and Russian energy policy (located in
the Aleksanteri Institute). The discipline has two university lectureships, and
some 20 researchers and doctoral students work under its auspices.

According to Section 33 of the Universities Act (No 558/2009), a professor shall
carry out and supervise scientific work, provide education based on it, follow
developments in research, and participate in societal interaction and
international cooperation in his or her field.

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a
professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly
qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, the
ability to provide top-level teaching based on research and to supervise theses
and dissertations as well as documentation of international cooperation in the
research field that the appointee represents.

When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to
scientific publications and other research results of scientific value,
teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching
material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching
skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. The
applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external
research funding, international research networks and elected positions as well
as leadership and interaction skills shall also be taken into account. When
making the selection, diverse expertise in the field of social policy will be
considered an asset.

According to the Government Decree on Universities, professors are required to
be competent in the language in which they provide instruction, in other words,
Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in
Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not
been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement
without a separate application. To successfully attend to the duties of the
position, appointees must also have good English skills.

The salary will be based on levels 8-10 of the job requirement scheme for
teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities.
In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal
work performance.

Applicants are requested to enclose with their applications the following
English-language documents: curriculum vitae, a numbered list of publications,
a one-page informal report of the applicant’s scientific activities, a one-page
plan on how the applicant intends to carry out the duties of the position and
develop the field, a report on teaching skills (max. 3 pages in the form of,
e.g., an academic portfolio) and a report on acquired external funding.

Applicants are kindly asked to be ready, upon request from the Faculty, to
submit 10 publications for assessment after the application period. The
publications must be submitted as PDF attachments. Applicants should indicate
these documents on their list of publications.
