The APSA Comparative Politics Section solicits nominations for its
Data Set Award. This award is given annually for a publicly-available
data set in the field of comparative politics. The interrelated goals
of the award include a concern with encouraging development of
high-quality data sets that contribute to the shared base of empirical
knowledge in comparative politics; acknowledging the hard work that
goes into preparing good data sets; recognizing data sets that have
made important substantive contributions to the field of comparative
politics; and calling attention to the contribution of scholars who
make their data publicly available in a well-documented form. The
previous winners of the award are listed at
http://macht.arts.cornell.edu/wrm1/dataprize.winners

To make the ideal nomination, please send a brief description of the
data set you wish to nominate (including everyone who is being
nominated for preparing the data set), a description of and citations
to any papers or publications that have so far been produced using the
data, and pointers to where the data and documentation may be obtained
(both by the committee and by interested researchers in general). In
most cases data sets that are being nominated for this award will have
been submitted for distribution to one of the standard data archives,
but if circumstances warrant that will not be considered a
requirement. If such nonsubmission describes the data set you have in
mind, please explain the circumstances.

Less than ideal nominations that simply identify a person you think
should be considered (and at least in vague terms for what) are
welcome as well. In such cases the committee will contact the person
to seek a more complete description along the preceding lines.

Self-nominations are welcome.

If at all possible, please send nominations by April 14, 2005. The
committee faces a June 1 deadline for making an award. Please send
nominations by email to all three members of the awards committee:

Russell Dalton <[log in to unmask]>
Walter Mebane <[log in to unmask]>
Lyle Scruggs <[log in to unmask]>

If you wish to send something by paper mail, please send three copies
to me (as committee chair) at the Cornell Government Department and I
will see to it that the other committee members receive a copy:

Best,
