The Political Methodology Emerging Scholar Award: This is designed to honor a young researcher, within ten years of their degree, who is making notable contributions to the field of political methodology.

2012 Political Methodology Emerging Scholar Award Winner: Jake Bowers (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign)

Citation: Jake Bowers' (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) work spans multiple domains of political science and political methodology. Most recently he has turned his attention to questions in causal inference, with a series of papers appearing in political science (Political Analysis) and statistics journals (JASA, Statistical Science), driven by applications in political behavior. Bowers has also made contributions to understanding multi-level data in political science, with implications not only for data analysis but also for the design of studies spanning multiple levels of analysis. His paper, "Attributing Effects to a Cluster Randomized Get-Out-The-Vote Campaign", with Ben Hanson, won the 2010 Franklin Burdette prize for best paper presented at APSA 2009 (as published in JASA: http://amstat.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1198/jasa.2009.ap06589). Bowers' is also a prolific contributor of statistical software, with R packages often accompanying his methodological interventions, furthering the reach of his work and providing valuable service to political methodology and quantitative social science.
Submitted by the Selection Committee: Simon Jackman (chair), Wendy K. Tam Cho, Kevin Quinn, and Jeffrey Lewis. (The prize will be formally awarded at the APSA 2012 Business Meeting of the Political Methodology Section.)
Please join the committee and me in congratulating Jake!
