Subject: Invitation for PhD Students to Apply for the May 2023 Event on Survey Data Harmonization

Dear Janet,

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to ask if it is possible that you share news about an upcoming comparative methods event at OSU, which Maciek, Craig and I organize within the NSF survey harmonization project. There is a possibility of funded participation of PhD students from US universities to come to Columbus. The event is free of charge for registered participants. Specifically:

The Ohio State University and Polish Academy of Sciences' joint CONSIRT program (Cross-national Studies: Interdisciplinary Research and Training program) is organizing a multi-day event at OSU on survey data harmonization in the social sciences and multi-level modeling. We are writing to encourage PhD students to apply to attend.

The event, "Comparative Analyses Using Multi-Source Databases: Insights from the Survey Data Recycling (SDR) Project," will take place from May 9-12, 2023, at the OSU Department of Sociology and the Mershon Center for International Security Studies in Columbus, Ohio. The conference (May 9, 2023) will focus on comparative survey research and the opportunities and challenges of ex-post survey data harmonization. This will be followed by a three-day workshop (May 10-12, 2023) on statistical methods for analyzing multi-level harmonized datasets, the SDR dataset 2.0 in particular. SDR 2.0 covers 4,402,489 respondents surveyed from 1966-2017 in 156 countries. It contains individual-level measures of socio-demographics, political attitudes and behaviors, social capital, and well-being, constructed via ex-post harmonization of social survey data pooled from 3,329 national surveys stemming from 23 major cross-national survey projects, including the World Values Survey, the European Social Survey, and the International Social Survey Programme, among others.

The event will feature a range of speakers, including Dr. Christof Wolf (University of Mannheim, and President of GESIS, Germany), who will deliver the keynote lecture, as well as Dr. Francesco Sarracino (STATEC, Luxemburg), Dr. Ranjit Singh (GESIS), Dr. Joonghyun Kwak (Oxford University, UK), and members of the SDR Team. The workshop will be led by Dr. Malgorzata Mikucka (Mannheim University, Germany) and Dr. Michal Kotnarowski (Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences).

We invite graduate students and recent PhDs and recent postdocs at OSU and other universities in the US to apply to participate in this event. Participation in the SDR event is free of charge for all selected researchers. The organizers will also award up to nine travel awards for out-of-town PhD students and postdocs. The deadline for electronic submission of applications is March 24, 2023.

We believe that this event offers a unique opportunity for PhD students and recent postdocs to expand their knowledge and skills in comparative survey research and data harmonization. By attending, they will have the chance to learn from leading experts in the field and gain hands-on experience with the SDR database 2.0.

Please find attached the Call for Applications with more details about the event. For more information, please visit the CONSIRT website<https://consirt.osu.edu/events/>, and for questions about the call or the event, please contact us.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

My best,

Irina.
