The John T. Williams Dissertation Prize: In recognition of John T. Williams'
contribution to graduate training, the John T. Williams Award has been
established for the best dissertation proposal in the area of political
methodology.

2013 Williams Prize Winner: Scott Cook (University of
Pittsburgh) for dissertation proposal, "The Contagion of Crises: Estimating
Models of Endogenous and Interdependent Rare Events"

Citation: Scott Cook (University of Pittsburgh; Dissertation
Committee: Jude Hays (chair), Burcu Savun, Daniela Donno, & Rob Franzese)
John T. Williams Dissertation Award for his dissertation proposal, entitled,
"The Contagion of Crises: Estimating Models of Endogenous and Interdependent
Rare Events". While there were several very impressive nominees this year.
Scott's proposal stood out for the breadth and depth of its potential
contribution to political methodology and applied research across Political
Science. Scott is working not only on improving our understanding of binary
time-series cross-sectional models with spatio-temporal dynamics, but also
is developing methods focused on several important conditional quantities of
interest that have been previously under-utilized in this literature.
Further, his planned substantive work on the diffusion of financial crises
and civil war, as well as the systemic relationship between these two
process shows great promise.

The selection committee was Michael Colaresi, Guy Whitten, and
Irfan Nooruddin.

Please join me in congratulating Scott!

(The prize will be formally awarded at the APSA 2013 Business Meeting of the
Political Methodology Section.)
