Dear Dave,

on 2) - to me that the benefits of using LaTeX far outweigh the cost of
converting your file to Word format at the end of the reviewing process.
There are simple tools that help with the the conversion. Using TeX
Converter (http://www.mayer.dial.pipex.com/tex.htm#TexConverter) and HeVeA
(http://facweb.knowlton.ohio-state.edu/pviton/support/hevea.html) have
worked pretty well for me - sometimes going from TeX to html and then
saving as a Word file seems to work better. Admittedly, these programs
have problems with tables and some equations but generally the additional
editing is fairly minimal. If there are any other options out there that
people have found doing a better job I would, of course, be interested in
hearing about them.

on 1) - I would be surprised if political science journals were moving
away from LaTeX. Rather, judging by the extent political scientists are
using LaTeX by now I would expect more of them allowing LaTeX submissions.
This is taken from AJPS' website: "The manuscript also should be prepared
using Microsoft Word or WordPerfect. The contact author’s email
submission identifies the word-processing software used in the manuscript.
If it also uses mathematical programs, such as LaTeX, then the contact
author should send a pdf version of the file that enables the viewer to
copy text. The file must be distilled, that is, created in Acrobat with
the “security” setting to allow selection of text and graphics." I
understand this as a preference for Word or WordPerfect but not outlawing
LaTeX? Other journals like JOP, which like AJPS is published through
Blackwell, accept LaTeX - I would expect the publishing company to be
decisive about these issues but I might be wrong about this.

Best,
Indridi
