Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a 1-year full-time pre-doc at the intersection of economics, political economy, and history. The research assistant will be part of the project "Who Became a Nazi? A Structured Database of the German Denazification Questionnaires, 1945-1949" (DeNazDB). The project is led by Jan Stuckatz (CBS), Victor Gay (Toulouse School of Economics), Mikkel Dack (Rowan University), and Selina Hofstetter (Tecnológico de Monterrey). The project is funded by the German and French National Science Foundations, the Agence Nationale de la Recherche and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (ANR Link<https://anr.fr/Project-ANR-21-FRAL-0005>, DFG Link<https://gepris.dfg.de/gepris/projekt/469232628?language=en>).

The DeNazDB project aims to answer, what led Germans to support and join the Nazi party? Did they benefit materially from their membership? And how did they justify their choices? To answer these questions, the DeNazDB project will create an individual-level longitudinal database from the denazification questionnaires (Fragebogen) distributed in Germany's French and US occupation zones between 1945 and 1949. The Fragebogen contains detailed information about individuals' past membership in Nazi organizations, retrospective voting records, as well as academic and occupational histories, income, assets, and other socio-demographics. The detailed individual-level data will allow us to answer which demographic groups voted for or joined the Nazi movement, and which life events led to these decisions.

The research assistant will be based at the Department of International Economics, Business and Government (EGB) at CBS, Copenhagen, Denmark. EGB is a multidisciplinary department that conducts high-quality research in the fields of political science and international business and economics.

The expected starting date is around 1 December 2023, but flexible. In addition to a competitive salary, the position provides the opportunity to learn and improve coding, data management, and project management skills, and gain experience in an international and interdisciplinary research project at the intersect of economics, political science, and history.

Main Tasks:

  *   Assist the research team in developing a structured database of the digitized archival material.
  *   Develop the tools for inputting the content of the database (e.g., an MS Access database).
  *   Coordinate a team of student worker research assistants in inputting the content of the archival material.
  *   Create an extraction script to generate a usable database (in R or Stata).
  *   Conduct preliminary data analyses of the database.

Qualifications:

  *   Master´s degree in political science, economics, or history, or a related discipline
  *   Working knowledge of German is essential.
  *   Competence in coding with R or Stata.
  *   Experience in working with databases, such as MS Access is a plus.

Terms of employment

The salary will be around 35.800 DKK/month (4,800 EUR/month or 57,600 EUR/year) including pension contribution, depending on previous experience. A full-time position corresponds to 37 hours a week. Slightly reduced hours can be negotiated. The research assistant is expected to be physically present at the department on a regular basis. There is no teaching requirement for this position.
