PhD Fellowship in Canadian Politics, Data Science, and Immigration (Department of Political Science, UBC) — September 2024





Dr. Vince Hopkins is accepting applications for a fully-funded PhD position in Canadian politics and immigration. The methodological focus involves data science, especially randomized experiments. The position will start September 2024.

The Opportunity



This is a unique, fully-funded PhD position for a student interested in using data science to study Canadian politics and immigration. The successful applicant will benefit from excellent social and professional opportunities, including Dr. Hopkins’s new Behavioural Public Policy Lab, UBC’s Centre for Migration Studies, and the research group of the Canada First Research Excellence Fund project, “Migrant Integration in the mid-21st Century: Bridging Divides.” As a contributor to the Bridging Divides program, the successful applicant will have access to a research community of 100+ scholars across 27 partner institutions.



What We're Looking For



  1.  Skills: Some quantitative methods & statistical programming  (e.g., R, Stata, or Python).

  2.  Interests: Canadian politics, immigration, behaviour/psychology, public policy.

  3.  Methods: Interest in experiments (survey/lab/field) or causal inference w/ “Big Data”.

Qualifications



  1.  Advanced level degree (e.g. MA in Political Science) or equivalent.

  2.  Excellent written and oral skills in English.

  3.  Fulfillment of eligibility requirements by August 15, 2024.

  4.  Open to all qualified applicants, though preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
