Hi Peter,
I'm sure others will be able to point you to easy-to-use data, but one
great source that has the 1983 UK constituency-level results (and goes
back to 1832!) is the University of Michigan's Constituency-Level
Elections Archive (CLEA): http://www.electiondataarchive.org/.
Just download the format you need, and then scroll through to the UK
and the years you want. Another great source is the European Election
Database (http://www.nsd.uib.no/european_election_database/country/uk/),
but the UK data only goes back to 1990.
