UCD COLLEGE OF HUMAN SCIENCES
Thematic area "Human Values, Institutions and Behaviour"

I. Context and definition
-- University College Dublin has identified a number of strategic
"thematic areas" including one entitled Human Values, Institutions and
Behaviour. The purpose of this thematic area is to enable researchers to
undertake comprehensive analyses of a broad spectrum of human behaviour
and fundamental human values while taking account of how the connections
between values and behaviour are mediated and moulded by social, political
and economic institutions, structures and practices.
-- In order to develop this thematic area, UCD proposes to make a
number of core academic appointments at varying levels up to and including
professor.
-- Research programmes pursued in this area will seek to realise the
potential inherent in the notion of Europe as a natural laboratory for the
social sciences in which the diversity of histories, cultures,
institutions and practices provide researchers with a unique opportunity
to analyse human behaviour and human values in all their contextual
complexity and in a methodologically rigorous fashion.
-- Three factors have combined to create a remarkable set of
opportunities for the analysis of human values and human behaviour at UCD.
The first of these is the establishment of the College of Human Sciences
and of the Geary Institute in UCD. The second is the strong commitment to
postgraduate teaching and research that is manifested in the Irish
government's higher education policy. The third factor is the availability
of an extensive range of data covering up to 25 European countries (ESS,
EVS, EB, CSES, ISSP, SILC, HIS, SHARE etc.). These opportunities are
enhanced by recent developments in the methodology of cross-level
inference and analysis.
-- The programmes will draw on a broad range of disciplines including
behavioural and comparative political science, criminology, environmental
science, geography, history, jurisprudence and comparative constitutional
law, macro- and micro-economics, moral and political philosophy,
philosophy of language, philosophy of science, social psychology,
sociology, and statistics.
-- The issues to be covered include environmental issues, health and
health-related issues and behaviour, economic issues, experience of crime
and security, voting, welfare, governance, national/ethnic conflict, human
rights, European integration, media use, migration, aging, gender,
family, social stratification, family and work-life balance, religious
practice and belief, and educational experience and achievement.

II. Profile of the individuals required
The individuals appointed will have a demonstrated commitment to
theoretically-informed, comparative analysis of selected aspects of human
values and behaviour. They will have expertise in the application of
appropriate econometric/statistical methods, in particular in the area of
multi-level analysis. It goes without saying that the other major
attributes required are a sterling publication record (appropriate to
career stage), demonstrated capacity for leadership/ teamwork and a track
record and/or credible future plans for raising research funding.

III: Expressions of Interest comprising a curriculum vitae and a brief
statement of intent (up to five pages) should be sent in confidence to the
search committee chair: [log in to unmask] [Professor Richard
Sinnott, The Geary Institute, UCD, Belfield, Dublin 4]
