To all Americanists who are unemployed, under-placed, or unhappy:

Below is a new job posting in American politics. The ad states that we have
a preference for those who build on the strengths of the department, but
that should not discourage those that do not have those strengths to
apply-we are looking for great scholars in American politics. The deadline
for application is March 3.

SIU is a research university with light teaching load, competitive salaries,
and more than sufficient resources. The department is a PhD granting
department that is growing in both numbers and productivity. The university
has a long history of diversity (it currently has one of the largest
African-American populations of any university in the US) and service to the
region and state. If you are not familiar with Carbondale and southern
Illinois (i.e., you're not from here) you should know that it is located
close to both major cities in the South and the Midwest (driving times: St.
Louis, 2 hrs; Chicago 5.5 hrs; Nashville 3 hrs; Memphis 2 hrs; Indianapolis
4.5; Birmingham 5.5 hrs.). We are south of the Midwest flatlands; we border
a large, hilly national hardwood forest that boasts great backpacking and
other outdoor activities. Cost of living is quite low; the average home
price of only $105k. Overall, its location may not appeal to all, but the
town is a pleasant place to live and the job is great.

If you have any questions about the position and/or the department, please
feel free to contact me.
