I've created a ranking of political science departments at 378 American colleges and universities with regard to how lesbian-and-gay-friendly their core faculty members are.

This new ranking serves several important functions. First, gay and lesbian college seniors going on to graduate study in political science may use the ranking to identify departments hospitable to sexual minorities.

Second, lesbian and gay graduate students and junior faculty can rely on the ranking to determine welcoming departments for job placements.

Third, the extensive commentary accompanying the ranking makes a persuasive argument that political science serves as a dependable portal to the gay-and-lesbian-friendliness of the colleges and universities of which government departments are a part. Therefore, lesbian and gay high school seniors may use the ranking to find suitable places to apply to college.

The 20 most gay-and-lesbian-friendly political science departments are at these schools:

First Place: Oberlin College

Second Place: Johns Hopkins University

Third Place: University of California-Irvine

Fourth Place: University of California-Santa Cruz

Fifth Place: University of Chicago

Sixth Place: University of Massachusetts-Amherst

Seventh Place: Northwestern University

Eighth Place: Cornell University

Ninth Place: University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

Tenth Place: University of Florida

Eleventh Place: University of Virginia

Twelfth Place: University of California-Berkeley

Thirteenth Place: Hunter College, CUNY

Fourteenth Place: College of William and Mary

Fifteenth Place: New School for Social Research

Sixteenth Place: University of San Francisco

Seventeenth Place: University at Albany, SUNY

Eighteenth Place: University of Connecticut-Storrs

Nineteenth Place: Indiana University-Bloomington

Twentieth Place: University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill

A 2,500-word explanation is attached to the ranking and is designed to answer all viewer questions about it. Please refer to those comments if you have queries regarding the ranking.

The ranking is online at:

Feel free to share this information with students, colleagues, Facebook friends, and other interested parties, as well as with additional distribution lists.

Sincerely,

Dan Pinello
