Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Politics and Economics of Inequality

The Department of Political Science is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate with strong quantitative skills and experimental methods training in Economics, Political Science, or a related computational or social science discipline. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Jonathan Woon and collaborate on projects with the expectation of producing coauthored publications, using incentivized laboratory experiments and/or survey experiments and focusing on research addressing economic and racial inequality (including equality of opportunity, redistribution, affirmative action, and reparations), attitudes and preferences for fairness, beliefs about meritocracy, and knowledge of historical and structural inequality. Depending on interest, additional collaborations are possible on elections and voting games, ranked choice voting, beliefs, and partisan identity.

The position carries no teaching or service responsibilities, includes expectations of independent research, and provides a research allowance for travel and research expenses. The initial appointment is for one year, with the potential for renewal based on performance.

The social science and behavioral and experimental economics communities in Pittsburgh offer a vibrant, stimulating intellectual environment. Participation in the intellectual life of the Department of Political Science, the Department of Economics, and the Pittsburgh Experimental Economics Laboratory is encouraged.

Required qualifications:

  *   PhD in Political Science, Economics, or related social science discipline within last 6 years
  *   Strong training and skills in quantitative data analysis in R or Stata
  *   Experience in experimental research design and implementation (laboratory or online, incentivized or survey)
  *   Initiative and ability to work independently in research conceptualization and implementation
  *   Excellent writing, communication, and collaboration skills

Preferred qualifications:

  *   Proficiency with Python, o-tree, Qualtrics, Prolific, Mechanical Turk.
  *   Training and experience in causal inference, computational social science, machine learning, natural language processing.
