The College of William & Mary and the University of Georgia announce the 2nd Summer Workshop On Teaching about Terrorism (SWOTT). This year there will be two separate workshops. One will be held June 10-18 at the College of William & Mary, in Williamsburg, VA. The second will be held July 15-23 at the University of Georgia, in Athens, GA. The goal of the program is to enhance knowledge of terrorism and counter-terrorism by examining both classic and current research, developing teaching techniques & research methodologies, and creating a close-knit community of terrorism scholars.

The workshop seeks to: 1) offer an intensive short-course on the fundamentals of terrorism; 2) introduce professors and graduate students to new and innovative techniques utilized to teach about and research terrorism; and 3) provide access to high-level officials working in the intelligence and counter-terrorism fields. The workshop attempts to not only acquaint participants with the current issues that dominate US foreign policy and much of the world's attention (e.g., weapons of mass destruction and state sponsorship of terrorism), but also promises exploration into the classic works on the subject.

At this point, some of the confirmed speakers include: Navin Bapat (Penn State University), Mia Bloom (University of Cincinnati), Randy Borum (University of South Florida), Gerald Epstein (CSIS), Christopher Harmon (Marine Corps University), Bruce Hoffman (RAND Corporation), John Horgan (St. Andrews University), Wade Ishimoto (Office of the Secretary of Defense), Brigitte Nacos (Columbia University), Bard O'Neill (National Defense University), Walid Phares (NBC/MSNBC Analyst), Joseph Pilat (Los Alamos National Lab), Todd Sandler (University of Southern California/University of Texas - Dallas), Chris Taylor (Blackwater USA), and Leonard Weinberg (University of Nevada - Reno).

The workshop fee is just $150 and includes an eight-day trip to either Williamsburg or Athens (including airfare, lodging, and some meals), materials, a field trip to a counter-terror facility, and instruction. We will also host a welcome reception, an informal group dinner, and a closing banquet. Alumni of the program also have access to the members' area, which includes sample syllabi, PowerPoint presentations on a number of topics, and lists of terrorism papers at upcoming conferences. Information about last summer's workshop, a FAQ link for potential participants, and other information can be found online at our website: <http://www.swott.com>, or questions can be emailed to the workshop staff at <[log in to unmask]>.

Application forms are available online at <http://www.swott.com/apply06.htm> and will be accepted until March 31, 2006.

Please pass this message along to audiences you feel may be interested in the workshop.
