The Gosnell Prize: The Gosnell Prize for Excellence in Political Methodology is awarded for the best work in political methodology presented at any political science conference during the preceding year.

2012 Gosnell Prize Winners: Thomas Gschwend, James Lo, and Sven-Oliver Proksch (University of Mannheim) for "A Common Left-Right Scale for Voters and Parties in Europe"

Citation: The Gosnell Prize for Excellence in Political Methodology is awarded for the best work in political methodology presented at any political science conference during the preceding year. This year's recipients are Thomas Gschwend, James Lo, and Sven-Oliver Proksch, for "A Common Left-Right Scale for Voters and Parties in Europe." This paper was presented in the Methodology Section at the Midwest Political Science Association's 2012 Meeting (http://conference.mpsanet.org/papers/archive.aspx/2011/111007). This paper integrates two rescaling techniques to place national parties, voters, and European political groups across Europe in the same left-right space using European Election Studies survey data. Their scaling method addresses perception biases within countries and uses parties' membership in European Parliament political groups as an anchor across countries. It thus represents an important step forward in the estimation of party positions cross-nationally. Their common space scores not only provide party positions that can be used in comparative cross-national research, but also produce voter-level data that can test theories of spatial voting and representation in cross-national studies. This is a well-executed application that combines a number of methods, and produces something of value to other scholars. The selection committee was Jay Goodliffe, Jong Hee Park, and Michael Peress. Please join the committee and me in congratulating the authors/presenters. (The prize will be formally awarded at the APSA 2012 Business Meeting of the Political Methodology Section.)
