Dear Colleagues,

The Mentoring Prize Committee is pleased to announce that the winner of the
2018 SPM Excellence in Mentoring Award is Professor Thomas Carsey
(posthumous). Professor Carsey stood out for the breadth and depth of the
nomination materials, which included detailed comments from over twenty
former students, colleagues, and advisors.

All comments were united by enthusiastic and heartfelt praise for Professor
Carsey’s commitment to mentoring. Embodying many of the comments, one
former advisee writes, “He was astute in his knowledge of political
methodology, incisive in his criticism of his students’ work, skilled in
his methods teaching, and generous with his advice about how to navigate
the discipline.” One of his colleague writes, “Tom Carsey was a
natural-born mentor,” while another comments, “I’ve never met someone more
dedicated to and talented at mentoring.”

A theme that jumped out was Professor Carsey’s commitment to inclusivity in
the methods community. “Tom demonstrated his firm commitment to inclusion
in political methodology,” writes a former advisee. “He fully believed that
everyone could succeed and that everyone had something to contribute.”
Another former student writes, “It is easy for graduate students to feel
that they are not part of the ‘methods crowd,’ especially if their
undergraduate training lacked methods classes. Tom went to great lengths to
counter this thinking. He encouraged everyone in his classes, from the top
students to those who struggled.”

Another recurring theme was Professor Carsey’s kindness. An advisee writes,
“Tom modeled outstanding moral character. He set the standard for treating
students kindly and generously.” A former student says, “Tom helped me see
that there was a place for me in the field and made me believe that I had
ideas worth sharing.” A colleague of Professor Carsey’s summarizes in
saying, “He is absolutely the embodiment of what we should all strive to be
as a mentor, and is therefore most deserving of this award.”

Although we cannot congratulate Tom himself, we salute the many scholars
who supported his nomination and who will no doubt carry on his mentoring
work.

sincerely,
The Mentoring Prize Committee
