Complete Position Description
The Department of Political Science, Loyola University New Orleans, is
seeking candidates for the position of Department chairperson, to begin
duties in August 2011. The position is tenured with the rank of full
professor. The field of specialization is open, but preference will be
given to candidates who complement and/or expand existing areas of faculty
specialization and qualify for appointment as full professor.

Candidates should have some significant background in public policy and
should be prepared to implement two major short-term goals for the
Department:

(1) initiate and guide development of a Master’s degree in Public Policy; and
(2) initiate or strengthen the Department’s capabilities in several (if
not all) of the
following areas: gender politics in general and women in politics in
particular; regional studies in non-Western areas (e.g. Latin America,
Asia, Middle East, Africa); minority politics (e.g., the role of
African-Americans, Hispanics , Asians or LGBT persons in American
politics), urban politics/urban studies, environmental studies.

Candidates should have a significant record of teaching experience and
scholarly productivity; have exhibited leadership in planning, budgeting
and other fiscal affairs at a departmental level; be able to articulate a
clear vision for the Department; inspire close collaboration among
faculty, students and staff to accomplish the goals of the Department;
understand the connectedness between the Department of Political Science
and other departments within the College of Social Sciences and other
schools and colleges within the University and its constituent community;
be familiar with the latest trends or at least standard practices in the
political science curriculum (particularly for a school and department of
our size); and, demonstrate the interest and commitment to guide the
faculty and students of the department in contributing to the re-emergence
of New Orleans as a vital, exciting city in commerce, the arts, and
intellectual endeavors.

Loyola University is situated in uptown New Orleans with an approximate
enrollment of 4600 students. The Department of Political Science has
approximately 110 majors, six full-time faculty members, and offers a BS
in Political Science.

The uptown area of New Orleans is among the loveliest and most historic
residential areas in any major American city. Like the University itself,
the area suffered only minor damage from Katrina and is now fully
recovered. It is home to Audubon Park (which includes a zoo, golf course,
and extensive biking and jogging paths) as well as some of the best
elementary and secondary schools in the city. The University is one of the
stops on the historic St. Charles streetcar line.

Applicants should submit a letter of application (that includes an
explicit statement of her/his vision for the Department), a curriculum
vita, statements of teaching and administrative philosophy that address
the above criteria, and three letters of recommendation to: Dr. Conrad
Raabe, Interim Chair, Department of Political Science, Loyola University,
6363 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70118.

Deadline for applications is October 1, 2010. The Department hopes to have
completed the process and filled the position by December 1, 2010.
