Dear Colleagues:

(Apologies for cross-posting)
We are excited to announce that Release 1 of the 2022 cross-sectional data for the GSS-along with the GSS cumulative cross-sectional file-is now available at gss.norc.org. Currently, the data are available only in SAS and STATA file formats. The GSS Data Explorer will be updated with the data from Release 1 today.

This is the first time in the history of the GSS that we have fielded three different modes of interviews: phone, web, and in-person. Since its inception in 1972, the GSS has conducted data collection via in-person interviews as its primary mode of data collection. The pandemic forced the GSS to explore new designs for the 2020-2021 data collection, moving the address-based sample from in-person to a push-to-web methodology, with the bulk of the interviews conducted online via a self-administered questionnaire. For the 2022 collection, the GSS team continued to push the innovation forward and pre-assigned households to either an initial experimental condition of a face-to-face interview or web self-administered questionnaire and supplemented these with some telephone surveys. To encourage response, eventually, households were encouraged to complete the interview in any of the three modes they preferred.

The 2022 GSS provides vital opinion data to the research community at a critical time in U.S. history as we move forward from the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to understand changes in society. While the data will contribute to our understanding of society post-pandemic, any changes in public opinion seen in the 2022 GSS data could be due to either changes in actual opinion and/or changes introduced through the experimental data collection methodology. When evaluating the GSS for trend changes over time, we caution our users to carefully consider changes in the GSS methodology from a total survey error perspective.

To help users assess these differences, we have included notes in our documentation (posted to the website (gss.norc.org<https://gss.norc.org/>)). There, our users can find helpful explanatory information explaining on the potential impact of the collection changes may impact the interpretation of the results.

The new 2022 data can be downloaded at https://gss.norc.org/Get-The-Data along with the following important documentation:

  *   Documentation and Codebook<https://gss.norc.org/Documents/codebook/GSS%202022%20Codebook.pdf>
  * Key Trends are expected to be available at 1pm CT.

Sincerely,
René Bautista
