Hello -- this new Europe-based venue, targeted at advanced students
(Master, beginning Ph.D) and junior researchers in political science (info
below), might be of interest for some colleagues, & also advanced students
and junior researchers in the U.S..
If I may add a "touristic" bit of info : Slovenia happens to be a great
place, too, with both the Southern Alps and the Adriatic coast (both of
which can be reached from Ljubljana in less than 1 hour), quite cheap (and
still comfortable) -- and within reach of great cities such as Venice,
Budapest or Vienna ;-)

Best regards,

Prof. Benoit Rihoux

============================================
From 2006 onwards (dates for 2006 : 7-18 August), the European Consortium
for Political Research (ECPR) offers a new Summer School in Methods and
Techniques in cooperation with the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). It
is targeted at advanced students (Master, beginning Ph.D) and junior
researchers in political science and sociology, but students from all
social and behavioural sciences are most welcome.

The aim of the summer school is to provide methods training opportunities
in addition to MA and PhD curricula at European universities and to foster
debate, interaction, and mutual understanding between various
methodological perspectives at an early stage in academic careers. The
curriculum covers introductory and intermediate courses in both
quantitative and qualitative methods, and also features some plenary
lectures and debates, so as to increase alertness of young researchers to
other methodological perspectives and possibilities.

The 10 parallel courses offered in 2006 are :
1. Basic Statistics
2. Mathematical Concepts and Formal Modelling
3. Expert Interview
4. Cross-National Survey Design and Analysis
5. Multivariate Regression Analysis
6. Interpretive Methods
7. Quantitative Textual Analysis
8. Systematic Comparative Methods
9. Comparative Historical Analysis and Case Study Design
10. Network Analysis

NB : special attention has been made to keep the registration fees low, and
also to provide some low-cost accommodation possibilities, to enable young
researchers from all over Europe to access the summer school. Researchers
and advanced students from ECPR-member institutions may also apply for
specific support through the ECPR (see ECPR web pages).

Full information (including detailed brochure in .pdf format, contact
details etc.) is available on the official Summer school web pages :
http://www.essex.ac.uk/ecpr/events/summerschools/ljubljana/index.aspx (can
also to be reached through the ECPR main page :
http://www.essex.ac.uk/ecpr/ )

Best regards,

Profs. Bernhard Kittel and Benoit Rihoux, Academic convenors
