2 Postdoctoral positions in quantitative migration research



Our newly established research group, headed by Professor Hangartner, conducts research that employs field and natural experimental methods to quantify the impacts of immigration and integration policies in Europe and other immigrant receiving regions. The goal of the research program is to generate rigorous evidence about what works and what does not when it comes to immigration and integration, and design better policies. We have a number of ongoing projects in multiple European countries and the postdoc will provide added support to these existing research efforts, while also helping expand the group’s research program. The principal job of the postdoc(s) will be to design and implement immigration policy evaluations and conduct rigorous quantitative analyses using advanced methods of causal inference. She or he will be involved in all aspects of the research, but with a particular emphasis on study design, data analysis, and preparation of manuscripts for leading peer-reviewed journals. The postdoc will have the opportunity to co-author papers that report on the results of the studies, work with an array of affiliated faculty from the Zurich and Stanford branches of the Immigration Policy Lab, and develop independent projects related to immigration and integration policy evaluation. In addition, the postdoc is expected to contribute a few hours per week to the group’s teaching and administrative duties.

The initial appointment will be for one year beginning between August and September 2017, with an expected renewal for two more years contingent on satisfactory performance. The ideal candidate will have, at the time of appointment, completed a PhD in a social science program, with a preference for Political Science, Economics, or Sociology. She or he should have a range of statistical skills including graduate level knowledge of program evaluation methods, data management, and data analysis; experience in running and analyzing field experiments and/or conducting quasi-experimental program evaluations would be highly useful; knowledge of immigration and integration policy in Europe would also be highly valued. While all work-related interactions are in English and excellent English writing skills are essential, the ability to operate in French or German is also an asset.
