4 positions for Research Navigators

80-100 % / Duration of appointment for an initial period of 5 years

In its effort to better support scholars and social scientists in the context of the digital transformation, the University of Basel is establishing a new unit for Research and Infrastructure Support (RISE): https://rise.unibas.ch. The RISE team supports researchers in the humanities and social sciences and at the University Library of Basel in issues of computer-based research, the production and analysis of data, the user-oriented presentation as well as the sustainable and open availability of data.
Three of the positions are based at the Digital Humanities Lab, one at the UB Basel.

We offer four research assistant positions pertaining to the following areas


§  databases and repositories,

§  digitization, indexing and editions

§  real time data (e.g. social media) and network analyses,

§  data analysis (quantitative text analysis, images/videos as data) and

§  interactive computing.

Your tasks

Your main tasks will include:


§  Are you interested in issues related to data-intensive humanities and social sciences, computer-based research management from the preliminary concept and planning of research projects to sustainable securing of data and their analyses, collaboration with researchers and students?

§  Your task is to support researchers in the humanities and social sciences for the conception, application, implementation and sustainable safeguarding of data-intensive research projects. Of particular interest are qualifications in individual focal areas of databases and repositories, digitization, indexing and editions, real-time data, analysis of data and interactive computing.

§  In addition, you will be expected to participate in and also conduct workshops, summer schools and the like on recent developments in the computer-based social sciences and humanities and their infrastructures.

§  At the same time, you will contribute to the establishment and further development of Research and Infrastructure Support (RISE). Active participation in joint as well as independent research projects and publications is desired.

Your profile


§  a completed university degree (MA/MSc) and a dissertation (PhD) or comparable experience in relevant subject areas

§  research experience with computer-based methods in the humanities and/or social sciences and/or edition studies

§  practical experience in ICT and computer-based research in the humanities and/or social sciences

§  practical experience in the field of digitization, processing and digital use of historical materials or social science data series

§  experience in drafting, setting up and applying for research projects

§  sense of communication, dialogue and mediation between different interest groups

§  interest in writing concepts for teaching and teaching in the University's continuing education programs

§  Very good knowledge of English
