Dear Political Methodologists,

hi. The Center for Social Media and Politics at NYU (https://csmapnyu.org <https://csmapnyu.org/>) is looking to hire a data-scientist. This is an unusual role split between working as a data-scientist on center research projects, and working with the center directors and faculty to write grant proposals. All research in the lab is based on a collaborative model, and the person who takes this role will be expected to be a co-author on many academic papers.

To apply - please go to the application online: https://apply.interfolio.com/140966

This could be an excellent opportunity for someone who likes doing data science, and has interest in the work the center does. CSMaP studies the impact of the digital information on politics broadly. Our research makes use of modern machine learning methods, extensive collections of digital trace data, and survey data paired with methods to collect individual online behavior.

The full ad is listed below.

Feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions.

Description

The NYU Center for Social Media and Politics (CSMaP) is looking for a Researcher to support the center’s broad research agenda. The role will have two main areas of focus, which will be roughly split 50/50 between grant proposal writing and doing data science. In particular:

First, this person will work closely with center leadership to write compelling grant proposals for research projects, engaging a wide range of public and private funders. This will not only require a deep understanding of our research, but also the ability to articulate complex and technical concepts in a clear, persuasive manner.

Second, this person will work as a research data scientist on center projects, providing support on quantitative research including data collection, data cleaning, and rigorous statistical analysis and modeling. Previous work has focused on information & misinformation, political participation, public opinion, elite & mass behavior, foreign influence campaigns and propaganda, political polarization, how authoritarian regimes respond to online opposition, and data science methodology. All of our research is the product of lab-based social science; as a result, this person is expected to be a co-author on academic papers.

CSMaP is at the forefront of studying the impact of the digital information environment on politics, and this new role is an exciting opportunity to be part of both the cutting-edge research and the growth of the organization.

The directors of the Center for Social Media and Politics are actively seeking a diverse group of students, engineers, postdocs, faculty collaborators, and staff, and encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply. We believe in the importance of diversity as a key to the long-range health and vibrancy of the field, as well as its ability to create a more stimulating intellectual environment.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $80,000 - 120,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in Social Science, Information Science, Network Science, or a closely related field.
Demonstrated experience in quantitative social science research, with proficiency in programming using R and/or Python.
Excellent writing abilities, crucial for both grant writing and research publication.

Application Instructions

Interested candidates should submit a resume/CV and a writing sample (a grant proposal or research paper).
