Hello all,

I’m writing to flag a new ICPSR Short Workshop that I’ll be teaching this summer. The workshop is called Theoretical Models for Statistical Inference, and it will run from August 7-9. It’s an overview of different theoretical modeling techniques, including agent-based network and cellular-automaton models, system dynamics models, game theory, and public choice. The goal is to show students different ways of theorizing, so that they can better articulate their theories and connect them to more meaningful statistical tests.

The syllabus for the course is here: https://www.notion.so/braumoeller/Theoretical-Models-for-Statistical-Inference-14b43f74ab3d42ddae7ba7f60d34fc42. Given that it’s a somewhat unconventional course, I’ve also made a short video explaining the course and its goals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i27Mjwnd1P4. For anyone interested in a more in-depth discussion, I recently published an H-Diplo essay on teaching formal theory that lays out the motivation in more depth: https://tinyurl.com/HDTBFB. I’m also happy to answer any questions.

I’d be grateful if you’d pass this email along to colleagues or students who might be interested. You or they can register here<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/umich-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/2zxBoKGSAk9uzOFtJgvFlhoftp56HbQ0vf5JH2JlmNoP5WBp8hwFzFNgm-PKXUGqWhawdDC-BvHDoHE9h4w5a-AUZSBlHFymdhHv5zVYgSzzy5d4AbPfA6_x82ozRlOgLOEF3olp7KgcR6p_rne8en38G5wzQYUfm-7m6aU0dcA7cyOTYFbysJ7ZrTvnTpiB7mUrxAWv4zVV2e4hMzw3JuaeQyL08k_CVYyBgY-8___;!!KGKeukY!xhztI0kVzvAJ0RkZjDUOoe0D_XoWQC8vpL15YrHYkgeZoEduz3Eg-SvmxXR_Tbhz0HGz1CO_K-55EIJjll6HDRWdFnkODA$>.
