Call for Proposals

Conference Within a Conference (Mini-Conference)

To be held within the Southern Political Science Association Conference

January 10-13, 2024

New Orleans, LA

______________________________________________________________________________

Dear Colleagues:

We invite paper proposals for a “Conference Within a Conference” (CWC) – mini-conference – on The Politics of Disasters: Bringing Everyone Together, during the upcoming Annual Meeting of the Southern Political Science Association in New Orleans, LA, January 10-13, 2024. The deadline for submitting paper proposals is Thursday, August 10, 2023.

Objectives:

The 2024 CWC continues what is now a tradition of CWCs focusing on issues related to hazards and disasters. The CWC serves as a venue to share recent research and learn about work others are doing related to this topic. We aspire to host theoretically informed and methodologically rigorous research across the range of relevant topics: from warning systems to recovery and electoral politics to social vulnerability. The CWC is open to proposals from any subfield of political science – or beyond the traditional confines of the discipline.

As we face a series of changing hazards, the politics of disasters is taking on new shapes. From tornados in parts of the US that are unaccustomed to such events to historical heat waves in the US and Europe, disasters are no longer a niche area of politics and political science. They are moving to the forefront of public opinion, advocacy, legislation, and administration. The CWC is particularly interested in proposals that address issues of public engagement within the domain of disaster politics. However, we accept proposals on any aspect of the politics of disasters (broadly defined). Example of such topics include:

  * Public opinion, disasters, and electoral consequences of disasters

  * Bringing new parties into the planning for and response to hazards

  * The policy consequences of long-term disaster recovery for labor markets, public behavior, and other social, political, and (macro-)economic outcomes

  * Equity, social justice, social capital, networks, civil society organizations, and their influence on resilience

  * Networks and network analytic approaches to studying disaster management and hazards governance

  * Methods for researching disaster response, resilience, recovery, and emergencies, including qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, and the integration thereof

  * Epistemological questions regarding the ethics of disaster research and its effects on vulnerable groups

  * Comparative international disasters and emergencies

  * Comparisons of emergency management and the politics of disasters across countries

  * Policy process and policy change relating to pandemics, disasters, and other disruptions

We also seek proposals for one or more round tables that engage in topics such as such as those above. Please circulate this call to all relevant networks.

The CWC will be held during the upcoming Annual Meeting of the Southern Political Science Association in New Orleans, LA, January 10-13, 2024. For additional information on the conference and the SPSA, please visit the conference https://convention2.allacademic.com/one/spsa/spsa24/. You may also email any of the co-hosts (below) with any questions.

In the past, successful proposals have been invited to participate in one or more special issue(s) in relevant internationally-ranked journals. Depending on demand, participation, and topical range, 1-3 new special issues may be proposed, organized, and workshopped during this CWC.

Venue:

The Southern Political Science Association conferences provide a venue for intensive and high-quality interactions as part of their “Conference Within a Conference” (CWC) format. Within this heading, a CWC can organize several panels, workshops, and/or round tables on a central topic. Paper proposals will be reviewed by an international steering committee (see below).

All transportation, fees, and accommodation for the SPSA Annual Conference must be borne by the participant, and all participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements. Should the SPSA 2023 be moved online, participants will be responsible for arranging their own internet access.

Submission Process:

Interested parties should submit an abstract here and/or may click this link to do the same: https://essex.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_06O17jA1MRcrrJI before 11:59 pm EDT on Thursday, August 10, 2023. Please do not submit to the SPSA site directly, as your submissions will not be forwarded to these CWC organizers. Anyone wishing to submit an entire panel or round table to the CWC should submit all the information at the above link. We will consider works-in-progress only. Please do not submit published, forthcoming, or accepted work.

Timeline:

August 10, 2023: Proposal submission deadline to steering committee via Qualtrics link

August 25, 2023: Notification of CWC acceptance (Those accepted to the CWC are considered accepted to the Conference at this time. Those not accepted to CWC will still have time to submit directly to SPSA as a typical stand-alone paper at this time.)

September 1, 2023: Formal submission of CWC, including accepted proposals, to SPSA by organizers

TBD: Submission of papers to panel discussants

January 10-13, 2023: SPSA conference
