*3-year postdocs with focus on political parties and public opinion, Department of Political Science, Aarhus University*

Deadline: 15 February 2021

The Department of Political Science at Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University, invites applications for two or three 3-year postdoctoral positions offering applicants an exciting opportunity to join an ambitious research project focusing on political parties and public opinion.

The starting date is August 15, 2021, but can be flexible subject to mutual agreement.

*The research project:*
The positions are part of the project "PARTYOPINION - The Informational Role of Political Parties in Citizens' Opinion Formation," led by Professor Rune Slothuus and funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant.

The PARTYOPINION project seeks to understand how and when citizens in advanced democracies rely on political parties to form political beliefs and opinions. The project is theoretically ambitious and seeks to develop a comprehensive understanding of how party cues affect citizens' political opinion formation and how cross-national variation across party systems in Western Europe interacts with citizens' reasoning processes and opinion formation. The project's central hypothesis is that parties' policy reputations affect to what extent and how citizens use party cues.

Methodologically, the project seeks to develop cutting-edge research designs with the aim of integrating (survey, field and natural) experiments with cross-national variation. The project will survey citizens' perceptions of parties' policy reputations across selected countries and, with this point of departure, develop a series of parallel experiments to test when and how citizens rely on communications from political parties to form political opinions in different contexts. The full project description is available upon request.

*Job description:*
The postdoctoral researchers will be employed as part of the PARTYOPINION research group and are expected to engage in collaborative research with Professor Rune Slothuus and the other members of the group. The postdocs' efforts will be important to ensuring the success of the project. We thus expect the postdocs to take a leading role in developing, designing and coordinating studies in one or more countries within the project, to conduct high-quality research within the context of PARTYOPINION and to contribute to publications in top outlets. Moreover, as part of the PARTYOPINION research group, the postdocs are expected to provide support for project-related research, organizational, and administrative tasks.

Successful applicants will become part of a cutting-edge research project and a vibrant and supportive research team. There will be excellent opportunities for intellectual development and mentoring as well as for developing an independent research agenda within the overall context of the project. The project offers funding for conferences, additional training, data collection and opportunities for developing a strong academic network.

In addition to the outlined research tasks, the positions entail teaching equivalent to one course per year. Moreover, if an applicant is interested, a one-year further extension in return for additional teaching might be negotiable, depending on the applicant's prior teaching experience and the department's need for teaching capacity in the relevant years. The Head of Department will decide on any such extension no later than one year after employment. Salary is according to the Danish pay schedule.

*Your qualifications:*
Applicants are expected to hold (or be close to completing) a PhD in political science, political psychology, political communication or another field relevant to the project. In addition to a keen interest in conducting collaborative research in the PARTYOPINION project, applicants must demonstrate ambition and ability to produce high-quality and high-impact research, both independently and in a team. They need to have an ability to work constructively and effectively as part of a research team.

Moreover, we expect applicants to have strong quantitative skills and excellent command of statistical programming languages (e.g., R or STATA). We prefer applicants that have experience with large-scale data management, comparative survey data and/or experience with or a strong interest in experimental designs and a willingness to acquire new methodological skills. Applicants are expected to have an excellent command of spoken and written English. Proficiency in one or more European languages other than English, as well as knowledge of politics in one or more European countries, will also be an asset.

In their application letter, applicants should motivate why they are interested in being part of PARTYOPINION and how they can contribute to the success of the project, outlining potential ideas for research relevant to the focus of the project (2-3 pages).
