The Post
We are seeking an outstanding quantitative researcher and teacher to join the
Social Policy subject area in the School of Social Political Science.
The appointee to the Lectureship will be expected to engage actively in
research, teaching and administration and play a full part in the collegiate
life of the Subject and the School of Social and Political Science.
Main Responsibilities
Teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including the supervision of
dissertations, practical work and projects, and doctoral research supervision;
assessment at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including the provision of
detailed feedback to students; contributing to curriculum development and the
design and revision of courses;
Developing and delivering courses which teach mathematics, statistics and
quantitative research methods to social science students;
Embedding quantitative research methods teaching into existing substantive
courses;
Research and scholarship, including the publication of peer reviewed articles in
the highest quality journals, securing and managing external research funding
and knowledge exchange activities;
Sharing in the administrative responsibilities of the Subject, including the
Personal Tutoring of students on its programmes.
The post is linked to the University of Edinburgh’s Q-Step Centre and the
UK-wide Q-Step Programme. Q-Step is a £19.5m programme designed to promote a
step-change in quantitative social science training. Over a five-year period
from 2013, fifteen universities across the UK are delivering specialist
undergraduate programmes, including new courses, work placements and pathways
to postgraduate study. Expertise and resources will be shared across the higher
education sector through an accompanying support programme, which will also
forge links with schools and employers.
Q-Step was developed as a strategic response to the shortage of
quantitatively-skilled social science graduates. It is funded by the Nuffield
Foundation, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Higher

Essential Criteria
The successful candidate will have particular strengths in the application of
quantitative methods. Experience of quantitative social science research is
highly desirable. However, applicants working in other highly numerate
disciplines may be considered. The successful candidate must have
A thorough knowledge of the theory and application of descriptive and
inferential social statistics;
Extensive experience of using one or more commonly used statistical packages (eg
SPSS, Stata, RS);
Experience of teaching with quantitative methods in a seminar or computer lab
environment, and a knowledge of issues and debates in QM pedagogy.
In addition, the successful candidate’s profile will include:
A PhD, either submitted or awarded by the time of appointment, except where very
exceptional experience might suffice as an equivalent;
Evidence of sustained and developing attainments in teaching, appropriate to
career path and stage, indicative of commitment to, and potential for,
excellence in teaching, and in the development of courses;
Evidence of sustained and developing investigative research and publications
activities, appropriate to career path and stage, meeting standards of
international excellence;
Evidence of attainments in, or skills sufficient to the development of, a full
range of supervisory activities from Honours dissertations to PhD theses
inclusive;
A combination of teaching and research which places the postholder at the
