Thanks, all, for your help on finding this information.

The best analyses I have found (in regard to the World Bank poverty
measure that I was most interested in)
are in a series of papers (and the references in these) co-authored by
Sanjay Reddy:

Reddy's arguments that poverty threshholds should be set higher seem
beside the point to me:
poverty is an inherently relative concept...
But his papers are excellent in describing a) how the data are
collected, and
b) what is done to the data after they are collected.
