POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP ON MODELING INTERNATIONAL SECURITY, 2023-24

The International Policy Center (IPC) at the University of Michigan’s
Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy seeks candidates for a postdoctoral
fellowship on modeling international security. This 12-month residential
fellowship will begin on July 1, 2023 and will focus on international
security, broadly defined, with an emphasis on formal modeling. IPC
seeks candidates interested in developing and applying game-theoretic
models to topics such as cyber conflict, economic and technological
disengagement, hostile influence campaigns on social media, cognitive
biases affecting decision making, and the foreign relations of Russia
and China. Substantial experience with game theory is required. The fellow
will have the opportunity to work with Professor Emeritus Robert Axelrod
and to engage with other IPC faculty affiliates and University of Michigan
scholars working in related areas such as political science, computer
science, and complex systems.

IPC offers excellent opportunities for scholarship, networking, and
professional development as the University of Michigan’s interdisciplinary
hub for research and training on international
policy topics. Fellows will be welcome and encouraged to participate in
IPC’s regular seminars and workshops, occasional conferences, and
high-profile speaker events. The fellow will also be invited to engage with
activities of the Weiser Diplomacy Center, which shares a suite with
IPC and leads a diverse array of programs focused on practical training in
foreign affairs. The fellow will be provided office space, library and
computing access, a competitive package of salary and benefits, and funds
for research-related travel.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed their PhD in a relevant discipline before
June 30, 2023 to qualify for this postdoctoral fellowship. If an applicant
is selected but does not complete the PhD by that date, the selected
individual will begin as a pre-doctoral fellow until such time as the
PhD is completed. We are interested in applicants with diverse backgrounds
and life experiences and from a diverse pool of academic disciplines and
PhD institutions. We welcome fellows who will expand the types of research
questions asked by our current community of scholars. The University of
Michigan is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit applications online here:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdRM8A0goYpI-gWaBlP99hVDbNLeMsAJrFZp8dZLZ-GOkkKzg/viewform
