The Society for Political Methodology is asking faculty and departments to support the Expansions Initiative.
The goal of the Expansions Initiative is to increase the diversity of The Society for Political Methodology by increasing diversity of the political methodology community and the field of political science.
Each year a cohort of 8 student fellows is invited to participate in the first summer session of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) Summer Program. At the end of their ICPSR Summer Program experience, Expansions Initiative Fellows are paired with faculty mentors who will collaborate with the fellows on original research projects. The initiative provides funds to support this research.
There are three ways faculty and departments can contribute:
1. Volunteer to be a mentor. We are seeking faculty to collaborate with and mentor our fellows this Fall. We ask that mentors meet with the fellows (remotely) each week to supervise a research project. The fellows will be paid as research assistants (RA) through the Fall semester. If you have a suitable project and are willing to mentor one of the students, please contact the Director of the Expansions Initiative, Clayton Webb ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) by August 21, 2021.
2. Volunteer to present to the Expansions Initiative Fellows. We are also seeking faculty who are willing to meet (remotely) with the Expansions Initiative fellows to offer perspectives on the discipline and advice on applying to graduate programs. Our plan is to put together a schedule of speakers during the Fall semester who can advise the fellows on how to select prospective graduate programs and help the fellows prepare their application materials.
3. Contribute financially. While the Expansions Initiative has received financial support from the National Science Foundation, we are asking for contributions from departments and faculty to fund the program moving forward. If you or your department is willing to make a one-time or regular contribution to the program, please contact the President of the Society for Political Methodology, Betsy Sinclair ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>).
Sincerely,
Clayton Webb
