Organization Overview

Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world. It conducts public opinion polling, demographic research, media content analysis and other empirical social science research not only in the U.S. but around the world. Pew Research Center does not take policy positions. It is a subsidiary of The Pew Charitable Trusts. The Center’s work is carried out by a staff of approximately 180.



Position Summary

The International Research Methodologist works directly with the Associate Director of International Research Methods and the International Methods team in shaping the Center’s approach to cross-national survey projects, implementing methodological experiments and providing guidance on how to design, implement and analyze public opinion surveys with complex samples in a wide range of countries using multiple modes. Recent lines of research include optimizing recruitment strategies, refining quality-control assessments, harmonizing protocols across countries and exploring more efficient modes of data collection (face-to-face, phone and online) without compromising data quality.



International Research Methodologists are involved in all aspects of the survey research process on the Center’s international projects including proposal reviews and vendor evaluations, sample designs, questionnaire development, interviewer training, fieldwork monitoring, quality control and data weighting. For all these tasks, attention to detail and individual judgment are critical.



The advertised position reports to the Associate Director of International Research Methods and works closely with colleagues across the Center to ensure that all international projects utilize the latest methods and uphold Pew Research Center’s standards for transparency, rigor and accuracy.



Primary Responsibilities

- Serving as a methodological consultant to international research teams across the Center to provide best practice advice at various stages in the research process, including overall study design, sampling, questionnaire development, data collection, sample performance, analysis and reporting

- Assisting with the development and execution of an international methodological research agenda for the organization

- Managing methodological projects from the background research and framing of the project to the specific design, implementation and analysis

- Reporting results from methodological research in publications, such as the Center’s Decoded blog, and presenting analyses to internal and external audiences

- Working with International Methods colleagues and project managers to assess mode viability within countries, identify qualified in-country vendors, draft Requests for Proposals, select vendors and draft Statements of Work

- Designing appropriate and accurate data weights for complex multistage samples

- Conducting independent data analysis or in collaboration with Center colleagues

- Writing methodology sections for reports and related materials to support public understanding of the methodologies used

- Standardizing design approaches, quality controls, measurement and data analysis across Center cross-national projects

- Maintaining familiarity with and understanding of the latest developments in international survey methodology

- Developing a reputation for expertise in one or more methodological areas

- Sharing information effectively and collegially with colleagues across research teams and throughout the Center



Education/Training/Experience

- Required: Master’s degree in survey methodology, statistics or quantitative social science field

- Required: Minimum of 3 years of applied survey research experience

- Required: Background in data management and analysis

- Required: Experience with SPSS, Stata, R or other statistical software

- Preferred: International survey research experience

- Preferred: Proven track record of successful methodological instruction, collaboration and innovation

- Preferred: Project management experience



Knowledge & Skills Requirements

- Background in social science research, especially survey and other social science methods

- Strong quantitative and statistical skills, including strong facility with SPSS, Stata, R or other statistical tools

- Experience in using advanced statistical analysis techniques, such as logistic regression, hierarchical linear models and experimental design

- Experience in designing first- and second-stage weights for complex samples strongly preferred

- Experience in cross-national survey design a plus

- Detail-oriented approach with rigorous standards to maintain accuracy and impartiality in all work

- Ability to work well in a team setting and provide leadership in technical areas

- Clear interest and capacity to train and develop skills in others

- Ability to successfully carry out projects from start to finish

- Proven ability to communicate research methodology and survey results clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences and stakeholders

- Ability to balance numerous tasks simultaneously and meet tight deadlines



FLSA Status: Exempt



Location:

- This position will, temporarily, be fully remote and will require a functioning Internet connection. Equipment to complete the work will be mailed to candidates and will need to be returned at the end of the position. At a later date, TBD, this position will be required to return/relocate to our office in Washington, D.C.

- Although this position will work remotely, Pew Research Center can only employ candidates in the following states- California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Wisconsin.
