Hi everyone,

This Friday, April 9 at noon Eastern time, the International Methods
Colloquium will host a presentation by Josef Woldense (University of
Minnesota, Department of African American and African Studies). Josef's
presentation is entitled "Interviews Are Not Small-N Surveys: Upending
Assumptions for Better Interview Sampling."

The abstract of the talk is as follows:

Is it appropriate to apply conventional notions of sampling bias from
> survey research to interviews? Not quite. We suggest that interview
> solicitation methods are best thought of as setting seeds in a network
> where the goal is to have those seeds germinate and further propagate in
> the network through referrals. That is, an interview sample is derived by
> (a) accessing a population and then (b) spreading within that population
> using the connections among the people. The implication is that "response
> rate" alone is the wrong evaluation measure. It must be paired with network
> effects. Among the implications that follow from our approach, the most
> practical is that the much maligned approach of "cold emails" can actually
> be a very useful tool for researchers despite its relatively low response
> rate.

To tune in to the presentation and participate in the discussion after the
talk, visit http://www.methods-colloquium.com/ and click "Watch Now!" on
the day of the talk. To register for the talk in advance, click here:

The IMC uses Zoom, which is free to use for listeners and works on PCs,
Macs, and iOS and Android tablets and phones. You can be a part of the talk
from anywhere around the world with access to the Internet. The
presentation and Q&A will last for a total of one hour.

I hope to see you there!
