Dear all,

We invite submissions to the Fifth Annual Southwest Workshop on Mixed Methods Research (SWMMR), which will take place on October 24-25, 2019, at ITAM (Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México / Mexico Autonomous Institute of Technology) in Mexico City, Mexico.

As in previous years, the fifth annual workshop will include several panels of junior and senior scholars who will present and discuss article- or chapter-length works in progress that either (a) utilize a mix of methods in substantive social science research or (b) analyze the methodology of mixed-method research. Papers should utilize or discuss the combined use of multiple methods of causal analysis in a single research design.

One of our goals for this workshop is to advance the professional development of junior scholars. We therefore especially encourage paper proposals from early career professors at the Assistant or Associate rank. Advanced graduate students are also welcome to apply.

Participants will receive critical feedback from distinguished senior scholars, as well as feedback from the other participants. Confirmed Distinguished Scholars for 2019 include Lauren MacLean (Indiana University Bloomington), Cyanne Loyle (Indiana University/Penn State University), and Alberto Simpser (ITAM).

SWMMR was co-founded in 2015 by four assistant professors and graduates of the Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research (IQMR) who share a dedication to methodological pluralism and the appropriate use of both qualitative and quantitative methods for deriving theories and testing hypotheses. The first four workshops, held respectively at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque in 2015, the University of Arizona in Tucson in 2016, the University of California Riverside in 2017, and the University of California Santa Cruz in 2018, were a great success. Each workshop included four panels, in which assistant professors in political science and sociology shared their work and received critical feedback from senior colleagues with an established record of mixed-methods scholarship. In all, nearly 90 junior and senior scholars have participated in the previous four workshops.

To apply, please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words that contains the following information: (1) Name of applicant, (2) Institutional affiliation and position, (3) Contact email, (4) Summary, and (5) Explicit discussion of the way in which the paper integrates different methods in a single research design.

Please submit your abstract no later than June 1, 2019 to [log in to unmask] Some of the costs of participation will be funded by SWMMR. Notifications of acceptance will be emailed in late June 2019.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,
