Dear all,

We are excited to announce the prizes for best posters presented at the
second Latin American PolMeth meeting. The event took place in November 8
and 9 in Bogotá, Colombia, and it was hosted by the Universidad de los
Andes, with support from Princeton University, the Society for Political
Methodology and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

LatAm PolMeth seeks to promote active involvement of students in our
meetings. The 2018 event hosted a poster session for graduate students. A
committee formed by John B. Londregan at Princeton University, Carmen Le
Foulon at the Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago Olivella at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Luis Maldonado at Universidad
Católica de Chile, and Santiago López-Cariboni at the Universidad Católica
del Uruguay, nominated a group of three posters to be distinguished with
the following prizes:

1. "*Latin American PolMeth Best Poster Award" goes for Sofia B. Vera
(University of Pittsburgh), winner of a trip to PolMeth USA 2019.*

"Electoral Accountability in Highly Unstable Party Systems: Experimental
Evidence from Latin America"
Sofia's poster presents an interesting argument and evidence on the link
between corruption and political accountability. On the basis of a clear
theoretical argumentation, she establishes hypotheses that were tested with
survey experiments in Peru. The design represents a smart combination of
theoretical parsimony, analytical precision, and empirical tractability.
The findings indicate, among other things, the existence of interesting
forms of heterogeneity among voters. Her work gives support to new research
questions that surely encourage future research about critical dimensions
of political behavior in Latin America.

2. T*he "IPSA-USP Summer School outstanding poster award" goes for Claire
Evans (Vanderbilt University) winner of a fee waiver to the IPSA-USP Summer
School, Sao Paulo, 2020.*

"The Political Consequences of Crime in Latin America: Applying MRP to
Latin American Survey Data"
Claire assembled an interesting dataset on crime and effectively deployed a
multilevel regression framework (MRP) to analyze the data and glean
important results about the political consequences of crime rates. This
work combines a substantively important question that has received
insufficient attention with state of the art methodology to push forward
the frontiers of the discipline. Evans's presentation skills were also in
evidence, as she proved adept at explaining her results, and connecting her
findings with the research projects of others.

3. *The "UCU-DCSP Winter School outstanding poster award" goes for Kaitlin
Senk (Rice University), winner of a fee waiver to the UCU-DCSP Winter
School, Montevideo, 2019.*

"Gender and Legislative Effectiveness in the Argentine Chamber of Deputies"
Kaitlin's poster was an exemplary study of the effectiveness of women
elected to the Argentine Congress. Assembling an original database Evans
systematically examined multiple facets of legislative productivity,
comparing women with their male counterparts. This fascinating study
clearly represents the beginning of an important research project, and it
epitomizes the effective use of the poster format to present early work.
Senk is to be heartily congratulated on her achievement.

Congratulations to the winners !

We look forward to seeing you all at our next LatAm PolMeth meeting in
November, 2019, at the Universidad Católica del Uruguay, in Montevideo.

Best wishes,
