This summer the ICPSR Summer Program is offering more than 40 short
workshops on a broad range of quantitative and qualitative topics. Seats
are still available in many ICPSR Summer Program short workshops, including:

Process Tracing in Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research
June 12-14, 2019 | Ann Arbor, Michigan | Instructor: Derek Beach
This course will provide participants with a good understanding of the core
elements of process-tracing as a distinct social science case study method,
while assessing its relative strengths and limitations and how it can be
combined productively with other methods in multi-method designs.

Dynamical Systems Analysis
June 17-21, 2019 | Salt Lake City, Utah | Instructors: Jonathan Butner
and Brian Baucom
Dynamic systems models provide a unique lens for studying change over time;
the focus in these models is on patterns of fluctuations about the mean,
the stability of these patterns, and how these patterns change under
different conditions. Research focused on how individuals, families,
groups, and communities grow and change over time is increasingly
recognizing the vast potential of dynamic systems models for advancing
understanding of complex temporal phenomena.

Experimental Methods in the Social Sciences
June 17-21, 2019 | Ann Arbor, MI | Instructor: Anne Cizmar
Experiments in the social sciences are increasingly common. Under ideal
conditions, they allow for detecting causality by simpler statistical
tests. Experiments take several forms, ranging from lab experiments to
survey experiments and large-scale field experiments. In this course, we
will begin by reviewing the idea of causality by comparing observational
and experimental designs. Then we will move into different types of
experiments and their statistical analyses. We will utilize published works
but participants are encouraged to bring their own projects to the workshop
as well.

Regression Discontinuity Designs
June 24-26, 2019 | Ann Arbor, MI | Instructors: Sebastian Calonico and
Gonzalo Vazquez-Bare
This three-day workshop gives an introduction to the basic principles of
the Regression Discontinuity (RD) design, and also discusses recent
methodological developments in the interpretation and analysis of this
quasi-experimental design. The workshop provides an accessible summary of
the assumptions behind the RD design and introduces participants to
different methods that are appropriate for the successful analysis of RD
empirical applications.

Spatial Econometrics
July 8-12, 2019 | Ann Arbor, MI | Instructor: Rob Franzese
Cross-unit (i.e., "spatial") interdependence is ubiquitous throughout the
social sciences, and beyond. Events or outcomes in one observational unit
are almost always related to similar occurrences in other observational
units. This is so for such diverse phenomena as disturbances and conflicts
within and among nations; policies in political jurisdictions; consumer,
investor, and producer choices in markets; individuals’ opinions and
behavior in societies; and voting by citizens in elections or by
legislators in legislatures. In such contexts, "standard" statistical
methods (which assume independent observations) are inappropriate, and
design-based methods of "nonparametric causal-inference" are, at best,
inadequate. This workshop introduces strategies appropriate for
interdependent observations, emphasizing spatial and spatiotemporal models
of interdependent continuous and limited outcomes.
