WESSI (Winter Experimental Social Science Institute) 2016

Call for Participation



‎I.  Overview



The Division of Social Sciences, the Social Sciences Experimental
Laboratory (SSEL) at New York University Abu Dhabi, and the NYU Abu Dhabi
Institute are pleased to sponsor the 2016 Winter Experimental Social
Sciences Institute (WESSI 2016) at NYU Abu Dhabi January 4-19, 2016.



WESSI 2016 is designed to provide training for social science graduate
students and junior faculty in experimental methods, broadly defined (lab,
field, lab-in-the-field, biological, and survey experiments will be
covered).  The 2016 Institute will also include special sessions on the
issues and concerns of conducting experiments in Africa, the Middle East,
and the surrounding region. Students at the Institute will be given the
opportunity to receive personal feedback on their own research, through
presentations and from meeting individually with faculty.



Applications will be accepted until September 1st and selected participants
will be notified by October 1st.

III.  Funding



Due to generosity from the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute, students at WESSI 2015
will not pay tuition and shared housing will be provided free of
charge.  Students
are only responsible for their own transportation expenses and most meals.



****PhD students at NYU are also eligible for a limited number of
transportation scholarships to Abu Dhabi.  If you would like to apply for
such a scholarship, please make a note in your application that you are
requesting a transportation scholarship.****



IV.  Special Workshops



This year WESSI participants can also apply to join in one or both of two
optional workshops at NYUAD, which will be held in January 2016 during and
after WESSI:

·      The Working Group in African Political Economy (WGAPE) will host a
special WGAPE meeting at NYUAD Jan. 7-9, 2016.  WGAPE brings together
faculty and advanced graduate students in Economics and Political Science
who combine field research experience in Africa with training in political
economy methods. It is co-led by Daniel Posner (Department of Political
Science, UCLA), Edward Miguel (Department of Economics, UC Berkeley), and
Brian Dillon (Evans School of Public Affairs, University of Washington),
who are collaborating with partners at NYU -- Abu Dhabi, J. Andrew Harris
and Peter van der Windt to host the special WGAPE meeting with a research
discussions component and training module.

·      The First NYU-Wide Workshop in Experimental Social Sciences will be
held January 20-21, 2016.  This workshop will highlight experimental
research conducted by NYU researchers at the three NYU portal campuses,
NYUNYC, NYUAD and NYU Shanghai.   The following faculty and postdocs will
