Colleagues -
The faculty and staff of the Cline Center for Advanced Social Research are pleased to announce the publication of a new Social, Political and Economic Event Data (SPEED) dataset documenting civil unrest, repression, and political violence in the Philippines, Sierra Leone, and Liberia (1979-2008).
These data were produced in collaboration with the US Army Corps of Engineers' Construction Engineer Research Laboratory (ERDC-CERL) and the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI). This project aimed to describe in detail the relationship between resource exploitation and instability, and to identify interventions that might mitigate resource-related grievances and conflict. Investigators designed case studies focused on nations with a long history of contention and conflict, as well as lucrative natural resources.
The Cline Center extracted these events from machine-classified, country-specific articles translated into English by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Summary of World Broadcasts (SWB) between 1979 and 2008 and the CIA's Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) 1999-2004.
The codebook describes the data and production process in greater detail and is available at the Illinois Data Bank, along with the dataset itself: https://doi.org/10.13012/B2IDB-7407320_V1
