Call for Proposals for Thematic Methodology Meetings

The Political Science Program and the Methodology, Measurement, and Statistics Program at the National Science Foundation have provided funding to support conferences and mentoring activities in political methodology for September 2011 - August 2013. Part of that funding includes continuation of the initiative (new in 2010) for smaller, thematically focused conferences, which is partly in response to the larger, more-inclusive format adopted for the Summer Meetings.

This is a call for proposals for a small thematic political methodology meeting. This conference should involve up to 30 participants and provide opportunities for scientific advancement and professional mentoring on a scale reminiscent of the original annual meetings of 25 years ago. These smaller meetings should focus on a specific topical or methodological theme (e.g., the first, in 2010, was on Path Dependence), but still provide for 2 days of presentations with similar format as the Annual Political Methodology Meeting of 90 minutes for each paper presentation and accompanying serious discussion. Possible topics for a thematic conference might be, for example, new methods in survey research, or in panel and time-series-cross-section data-analysis, or in multilevel/hierarchical modeling, or a conference on network and/or computational methods, on experimental methods, on quantitative analysis of natural language, on analysis of geospatial data, or on strategies of causal inference, or any other topic for which a suitable number of interested researchers can be found. Proposers can also limit their workshop to a specific substantive theme as long as there is a significant methodological component to it.

Applications should be sent by email attachment to PolMeth grant PI's, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> and [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. The application deadline is 31 August 2012. Applications should be in PDF format, not more than five pages in length, describe the general focus of the topic, and provide a list of individuals who are already doing work on the topic and might be interested in participating (they do not need to have committed to the conference), a budget, and a description of institutional support. Institutional letters confirming this support are not required at this time but will be prior to formal awarding of the funding. The proposal should also include URL for the vita of the proposer(s) and any other key individuals who have committed to participating.

Selected desiderata include:
* Topics of broad and diverse interest and methodological importance;
* Areas in which innovative, impactful scholarly work is nascent and/or ongoing;
* Organizers with institutional support to cover the bulk of the expenses;
* Diversity in subject matter, format, and locale across these thematic conferences, though this last is still developing given the only one prior such conference.

The NSF grant will provide partial support for this conference in an amount of up to $10,800 to help defray costs for 30 participants. While these funds will provide up to $10,800 for participant travel and expenses, it is expected that participants would pay for their own transportation & lodging when possible.
