Maastricht University (UM) is the youngest university in the Netherlands and renowned for its unique, innovative, problem-based learning system, which is characterized by a small-scale, student-oriented approach. Research at the UM is multidisciplinary and deals mainly with contemporary issues. Currently the UM has around 11,500 students and 3,000 employees. Reflecting the university’s strong international profile, a considerable number of both students and staff are from abroad. 

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) is a rapidly growing faculty with 200 employees and 1600 students. All programmes are (also) offered in English. Its students come from all over the world. FASoS offers two 3-year bachelors programmes: Arts and Culture, and European Studies, six different 1-year masters courses and two 2-year research masters programmes. It has a Graduate School with an intake of about 10 PhD students each year. Research is organized across three programmes: Politics and Culture in Europe; Science, Technology and Society Studies; and Cultural Memory and Diversity. Additionally, the faculty has a Globalization and Development Initiative, which clusters various multi-year, inter-disciplinary collaborative research programs conducted on themes of Globalization and Development.  The faculty is also home to the Maastricht Virtual Knowledge Studio, a collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is located in several recently renovated, 18th century buildings in the historic city-centre of Maastricht.

Tasks
You will contribute to the teaching in the BA and MA European Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, mainly through courses in the field of research methods. The Maastricht European Studies programmes study Europe and European integration in its broader international, historical, cultural and political context and from an interdisciplinary perspective. The language of instruction is English.

You will also contribute to the research programmes of the Faculty from your own area of expertise. While your teaching activities will take 60% of your time, research will be 40% of your employment time. Research time can be expanded through external fundraising.

Qualifications 
You have a PhD in the social sciences and you have experience  teaching research methods, especially quantitative methods.  

In your research you have extensively made use of quantitative research methods. You have published internationally and in peer-reviewed journals. 
Expertise in the field of European integration or international political economy is an asset. 
You have or expect to have an international reputation. 
You write and speak English fluently. Previous teaching experience in English is a asset. 
You are open to interdisciplinary work. 
You are a team player. 
Previous experience with innovative, problem-based teaching methods is highly welcomed. 

Appointment 
The appointment as assistant professor (‘universitair docent’) is initially offered for a three-year period with a probation period of one year. Depending on experience and qualifications, the gross monthly salary is between scale level 10, minimum € 2.379,00 and scale 11, maximum € 4.374,00 (based on a full-time appointment). The faculty has a policy of tenure track.
