The Society of Political Methodology is pleased to announce a new vice president (who will assume the SPM presidency on July 1, 2024): Arthur Spirling. Professor Spirling is the Class of 1987 Professor of Politics at Princeton University, and his career is marked by a commitment to developing methodological innovation and building our community. He helped to host the NYU PolMeth meeting (online). His goals as president are two-fold: First, to continue the international expansion of Polmeth—both as an umbrella organization and its conference(s)—such that it includes more scholars currently based outside the United States. Wherever there are researchers interested in what we do, they should find our Society ready to help them contribute, broaden our perspectives, and improve our work. Second, to focus Society minds on supporting our most junior members as they navigate the career. This is partly about ensuring there are plentiful presentation venues, and incentivizing high quality discussion at those places. But it is also about doing our best to ensure that the “nuts and bolts” of the discipline—including journal review times and review quality—help rather than hinder the progress of our least professionally secure colleagues. We would like to thank Professor R. Michael Alvarez for his tremendous service to SPM as the vice president for the previous two years. As VP, Mike helped SPM renegotiate its CUP contract, launch the Expansions initiative, and hold its first two annual meetings in person after covid.
