I’m excited to announce that the Database on Ideology, Money in Politics, and Elections (DIME) has been updated through 2020. It’s been a few years and a lot of hard work in the making. The database has more than doubled in size since the last release. Version 3 of DIME can be downloaded from: https://data.stanford.edu/dime. You can access the codebook here: dime_v3_codebook.pdf. <https://www.dropbox.com/s/xbcufe0wb7i391s/dime_codebook_v3.pdf?dl=1> In addition to covering a longer time period, I’ve made several major improvements to the database: - Added comprehensive data for state elections provided by the NIMSP/CRP that covers through 2020. - Added comprehensive vote shares and election outcomes for both primary and general elections from the FEC covering 1980-2020, which have been parsed and standardized. - Updated the ideal point estimation algorithm to improve comparability across election cycles. - Implemented a new supervised machine learning algorithm to bridge between state and federal elections. - Updated DW-DIME scores through 2020. - Added a SQLite version of the complete database available for download. I’m currently a one-person team with limited time and resources, but my hope is that future updates to the database will be more frequent. I spent a considerable amount of time paying down “technical debt” in this latest release and I hope this will speed up the process for future releases. Please feel free to share with others who might be interested. And, as always, I love to hear about the ways DIME is being used! You can cite the database as: Bonica, Adam. 2023.
