Vacancy: Researcher (m/f) (Dep. III)

Closing date for applications: 24.02.2011

The German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) is one of the leading think tanks on development policy. Through excellent research, policy advice and training, the Institute contributes to finding solutions to global challenges.

Department III "Governance, Statehood, Security" is seeking to recruit a:
Researcher (m/f)
100 % TVöD 13 or 14;
Salary between € 38.000,00 and € 49.000,00 depending on qualifications

The initial contract, to start as soon as possible, is limited until 31 March 2013. A prolongation will be subject to additional funding.

The successful candidate will enhance a three-member team which is working at the intersection of two research areas: “Fragile states” and “Democratization / democracy promotion research”. A research project on “Transformation and development in fragile states”, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), is a major component of this work stream. Employment is contingent upon the final approval of this project.

Main work area:
The project deals with the quality and depth of transformation processes and the role of development policy actors in different types of fragile states. Besides participating in the project’s ongoing research and policy advice activities, the successful candidate is expected to make a substantial contribution towards mobilizing additional funding for this area of research.
Opportunities will be offered to contribute to the Institute’s training activities.

Qualifications and requirements:

    * Master’s degree in political science or related social sciences; a PhD degree is a strong asset
    * Excellent knowledge and experience in at least one relevant research area (such as democratization and transformation or security and conflict studies)
    * Proven knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative methods of empirical comparative political research
    * Research experience in developing countries
    * Fluent spoken and written English and (for non-German native speakers) the willingness to acquire German language skills; proficiency in another UN language is an asset
    * Willingness to work in a team
    * Willingness and aptness to travel internationally within and outside Europe, including to countries with a tropical climate
    * Proven experience in applying for research funding is an additional asset.

The DIE offers a challenging professional environment at the intersection of research and policy advice, providing ample opportunity for participation in international discourses, political processes and research projects.

Same qualifications provided, physically challenged candidates are given preference.
