Overview of the post

The Department is seeking a University Lecturer in Social Policy with an
interest in social and public services or in social policy in developing
countries. The successful candidate will become a member of the Oxford
Institute of Social Policy (OISP), one of the largest research clusters in the
Department bringing together research groups in a number of different areas,
including children and families, education, politics of social policy, poverty
and social exclusion, and welfare and work. OISP undertakes both scholarly and
policy-relevant research, has a multi-disciplinary outlook, and employs a wide
range of research methodologies and theoretical perspectives.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute towards teaching in the
Department’s main graduate programmes: the masters courses in Comparative
Social Policy and the DPhil (Oxford PhD) in Social Policy.

The post of University Lecturer is the main career grade for academic faculty at
Oxford and is equivalent to an American associate professorship. The title of
Professor may be awarded through the ‘recognition of distinction’ exercise.

Duties of the post

The University Lecturer in Social Policy will be a member of both the University
and the College community. He or she will be part of a lively and intellectually
stimulating research community which performs to the highest international
levels in research and publications and will have access to the excellent
research facilities which Oxford offers. The successful applicant will also
become a member of Green Templeton College.

The main duties of the post are as follows:

(i) to engage in research;
(ii) to co-operate in the work of the Department in both term and vacation under
the direction of the Head of the Department. This includes teaching
undergraduates and graduates on taught courses;
(iii) to supervise graduate students;
(iv) to examine as required by the appropriate committee for the nomination of
examiners.

The amount of teaching under (ii)-(iii) normally must not exceed an average of
288 teaching units1 per year without approval by the Social Sciences Divisional
Board.

Specific duties

The University Lecturer in Social Policy will be required to:

1. engage in social policy research with a focus on social and public services
or on social policy in developing countries;
2. seek external research funding;
3. publish in highly-ranked, peer reviewed academic journals;
4. give lectures, classes and tutorials on the MSc/MPhil in Comparative Social
Policy;
5. lead a graduate research group on a relevant topic;
6. supervise doctoral and masters students in the Department;
7. contribute to the PPE option paper in Social Policy, if required;
8. serve as a university examiner when required;
9. undertake administrative duties as required by the Head of Department;
10. contribute to the work of the Department during both term and vacation; and
11. participate in the life of the College.

The post-holder will be responsible to the Head of Department.

Person specification

Applications will be judged only against the criteria which are set out below.
Applicants should make sure that their application shows very clearly how they
believe that their skills and experience meet these criteria.

1 One hour class, 3 units; one hour lecture, 3 units; supervision of one
doctoral student, 24 units; supervision of one Masters student, 12 units; and
other types of teaching to be weighted proportionally.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

1. a completed doctorate in social policy or a closely related social science
discipline, such as sociology, political science or economics;
2. an outstanding programme of research in social policy focusing on social and
public services or social policy in developing countries;
3. ability and willingness to teach, supervise and assess high-achieving and
challenging graduate students from diverse cultural backgrounds;
4. ability and willingness to apply successfully for competitively awarded
research grants in social policy;
5. a track record of internationally excellent social policy research and
publication in highly-ranked, peer reviewed academic journals;
6. ability and willingness to teach an option course in an area of comparative
social policy;
7. ability and willingness to work effectively as part of a team;
8. excellent oral and written communication skills; and
9. willingness to contribute to the life of the College.

All applications will be considered by the selection committee as soon as
possible after the closing date. All shortlisted candidates will be interviewed
and will be asked to give a short presentation to the committee as part of the
interview.

Applications for this post will be considered by a selection committee
containing representatives from both the Department of Social Policy and
Intervention and Green Templeton College. The selection committee is
responsible for conducting all aspects of the recruitment and selection
process; it does not, however, have the authority to make the final decision as
to who should be appointed. The final decision will be made by the Social
Sciences divisional board and the governing body of Green Templeton College on
the basis of a recommendation made by the selection committee. No offer of
appointment will be valid, therefore, until and unless the recommendation has
been approved by both the divisional board and the governing body, and a formal
contractual offer has been made.
