      the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands

The University of Amsterdam recruits a fully funded PhD candidate for
the Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies (AMCIS) and the Sociology
programme group "Institutions, Inequalities and Life Courses" for the
project "Life courses and inequalities".

We are looking for a:

PhD candidate in Sociology

The University of Amsterdam recruits a fully funded PhD candidate for the
Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies (AMCIS) and the Sociology programme
group “Institutions, Inequalities and Life Courses” for the project “Life
courses
and inequalities”. A description of the project can be found below. The
preferred starting date is September 2014.

Profile

&#8208; Graduate from a Research Master programme in Sociology or related
social science discipline (or graduating soon);
&#8208; Good writing skills;
&#8208; Good skills in quantitative statistical data-analysis;
&#8208; Knowledge of, or willingness to obtain knowledge of, the core interests
of
the IIL research programme.

Description of project: Life courses and inequalities

This project is located in the field of (a) social stratification and inequality
and/or
(b) family sociology and life course development. Examples of topics that can be
studied in field (a) are: the relationship between skills, educational
attainment,
and income attainment; the link between educational systems and inequality of
educational opportunity; the effects of family size and sibling configuration on
children’s success; differences between natives and migrants in educational and
occupational attainment and mobility. Examples of topics to be studied in field
(b) are: the long-term effects of family background on parent-child
relationships;
heterogeneity in the effects of life course transitions on health and wellbeing;
the
interactive effects of school and family contexts on children’s wellbeing;
differences between immigrants and natives in extended family networks and
parental support. The choice of topic will be determined in collaboration with
the
candidate. The candidate will use large-scale cross-sectional survey data and
large-scale panel data in the Netherlands and other (mostly) Western countries.
Data will be analyzed with advanced statistical models, such as multilevel
regression and panel regression models.
