Job description

This core chair (''kernleerstoel'') is embedded in the Section Methodology and
Statistics of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Utrecht
University. The chair focuses on methods and techniques of social scientific
research.

Teaching
The core professor has a leading role in teaching and supervision, and
contributes to the curriculum development at all levels: undergraduate,
graduate and PhD programmes. Teaching activities concern all the Bachelor
programmes of the Faculty and of the University College Utrecht, the research
master programme Methods and Statistics for the Behavioural, Biomedical and
Social sciences that is maintained in cooperation with a group in Twente and
the Biostatistics group of Utrecht University Medical Centre, post-doctoral
courses and summer school courses.

Research
The research of the chair focuses on methods and techniques for the social and
behavioural sciences and comprises topics like: survey research; study design,
data collection, data analysis, collection and analysis of intensive data and
big data; best practices when doing research, and mixed methods research.

Academic leadership
The core professor has administrative and managerial duties regarding personnel
in her/his chair. In addition, she or he plays an active role in the
administrative and managerial duties at the level of the  Section, Department
and/or Faculty.
Requirements

Teaching

    The chair holder is an inspiring teacher and can encourage and motivate
students to study methods and techniques.
    He/she has taught a variety of methods and techniques courses that have been
well-evaluated by students.
    He/she has a serious interest in innovation of education and has a vision on
content and didactics of methods and statistics education.
    He/she has experience and can provide leadership in curriculum development
at all levels: undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programmes.
    The chair holder has been successful in supervising PhD students.

Research

    The chair holder should have a curriculum vitae that will be well-evaluated
by, for example, NWO-panels for VICI grants and ERC-panels for consolidator or
advanced grants.
    The chair holder has a curriculum vitae that shows that his/her research is
of high quality.
    The chair holder has experience and success with applications for external
research funding.
    The chair holder has a clear vision concerning the research he/she wishes to
execute himself and with the group for which he/she will become responsible.

Consultation

    The chair holder has experience with and an interest in advising students
and staff with respect to methods and techniques.

Academic Leadership

    The chair holder has experience with and an interest in contributing to the
management of the section in an academic setting. Tasks may include management
of bachelor education, management of post-doctoral and summer school education,
management of the research master,  research management, or chairing the
section.
    The chair holder has excellent social, organisational and management skills.
    The chair holder plays an active role in national and international
activities in the area of the chair and participates actively in scientific
communities.

Work Experience

The chair holder should have substantial experience with teaching, research,
consultation, and management in work environments outside Utrecht University,
preferably including experience abroad.

Conditions of employment

It is a full time appointment (1,0 fte), in principle tenured position. The
gross salary depends on qualifications and experience and ranges in principle
between € 5.003,- and € 7.285,- per month for a full time employment of 38
hours per week (salary scale H2, Dutch Universities Conditions of Employment).

The salary is supplemented with an annual holiday pay of 8% and an end-of-year
bonus of 8,3% per year. We offer flexible working conditions to support a good
work – life balance of our employees. Other secondary conditions include e.g. a
pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible employment
conditions.

Applicants from abroad moving to the Netherlands may be eligible for a special
expense allowance scheme: the 30% facility. The Tax and Customs Administration
decides whether employees meet the necessary conditions.

This core chair has a standard division of tasks in 60% teaching and 40%
research. However, the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences uses standard
procedures that allow for less teaching time depending on external funding for
additional research time.
Organisation

Utrecht University has great ambitions for its teaching quality and study

The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences is one of the leading faculties
in Europe providing research and academic teaching in interdisciplinary social
science, cultural anthropology, educational sciences, pedagogical sciences,
psychology, and sociology. Research and teaching activities are concentrated in
five areas:

    Behaviour in Social Contexts;
    Child and Adolescent Studies;
    Cognitive and Clinical Psychology;
    Education and Learning and
    Methodology and Statistics.

More than 5,600 students are enrolled in a broad range of undergraduate and
graduate programmes. The Faculty has some 850 faculty and staff members, all
providing their individual contribution to the training and education of young
talent and to the research into and finding solutions for scientific and
societal issues.
