Call for Proposals

Conference Within A Conference (Mini-Conference)

To be held within the Southern Political Science Association Conference

13-15 January 2022

San Antonio, TX

______________________________________________________________________________

Dear Colleagues (with apologies for duplicate postings):

We invite paper and panel/roundtable proposals for a CWC – Conference Within a Conference (mini-conference) – on The New Normal? Rethinking Disaster Policy & Politics, during the upcoming Annual Meeting of the Southern Political Science Association in San Antonio, TX, January 13-15, 2022. The deadline for submitting paper proposals is Friday, August 20, 2021.

Objectives:

The 2022 CWC builds on the success of previous CWCs in fostering a cohesive and supportive network of disaster scholars in political science, public management, and public policy. We provide a venue for scholars to present their research, strengthen their networks, and shape future research into disasters, including pandemics and other societal disruptions, via theoretically informed and methodologically rigorous empirical work. We hope this conference will advance theoretical insights and knowledge from scholars of all areas, including emergency management, hazards, and disaster politics.

Since COVID-19 brought disasters and crisis management to the forefront of social and political awareness, we have seen a drastic increase in disaster scholarship. This year’s CWC considers this new literature in light of how and where it fits within existing disaster management and policy scholarship. We particularly seek proposals that address the increased attention to disaster complexity and uncertainty we see in practical and academic spheres, as well as the implications for these changes on the field of disaster studies. We welcome all submissions that consider attributes of disasters as either explanatory or outcome variables, including theoretical, empirical, and practical work. We particularly encourage topics such as (but not limited to):

  *   Multi-level and multi-layered disasters

  * Slow onset disasters and their mitigation

  * The role of vulnerable groups in mitigation and adaptation

  *   Intergovernmental relations and federalism

  * Equity/discrimination in preparedness and response to Covid-19 and other disasters

  * Political leadership and risk assessment in societal disruptions

  * Social justice, social capital, networks, civil society organizations, and their influence on resilience

  *   Networks and network analysis

  * Methods for researching disaster response, resilience, recovery, and emergencies, including qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, and the integration thereof

  * Epistemological questions into the ethics of disaster research and its effects on vulnerable groups

  * Comparative international disasters and emergencies

  * Public opinion and political behavior as pertaining to disasters, media coverage and effects

  * Policy process and policy change relating to pandemics, disasters, and other disruptions

Please circulate this call to all relevant networks.

The CWC will be held during the upcoming Annual Meeting of the Southern Political Science Association in San Antonio, January 13-15, 2022.
