Duties

This position is located in the Division of Social and Economic Sciences. The incumbent performs developmental tasks to gain experience for higher-level responsibilities. The social scientist works collaboratively with other science and administrative staff to perform tasks in support of Division Management and Program Directors, and ensures that the activities meet the scientific objectives and goals of the Division and the Directorate.

The incumbent serves as key scientific support person in the Division, responsible for the collection, analysis, and dissemination of objective data on science and engineering enterprise, including data related to U.S. competitiveness and STEM education.

Duties include:

-Assisting in providing scientific and analytical support on end-to-end merit review and award management and oversight processes.

-Preparing a segment of a portfolio analysis report of the Divisions investments in scientific research and education.

-Preparing analytical and statistical reports of program activities and scientific accomplishments in the social and economic sciences.

-Gathering and preparing data for Webinar presentations; other information and necessary data; and participating in analyzing and interpreting data for preparing reports or briefings for Program Directors.

-Preparing less complex automated and spreadsheet reports; developing, maintaining, and updating program databases.

-Scientific and technical analysis, documentation, and writing in support of reports and presentations regarding the social and economic research portfolios.

-Researching and retrieving Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences scientific information from databases and other sources of information.

-Screening incoming grant proposals for accuracy of information and compliance with proposal guidelines.

-Creating power point presentations and other ad-hoc assignments. -Assisting higher-level scientists on the proposal review process.

-Working with a higher-level social scientist in identifying outreach needs, developing outreach plans, and interfacing with others in planning and coordinating outreach/site visit activities.

-Coordinating the logistical support for site visits, outreach activities and workshops and preparing technical materials related to NSF supported research activities for presentations, tutorials, workshops, training, and poster sessions.

-Providing input into restructuring work processes, standardized procedures, and implements changes for organizations supported.

Qualifications

You must have the basic education and/or experience requirement as follows:

1. Degree: social, behavioral or economic sciences, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

2. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

OR

3. Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

To qualify at the GS-11 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the federal service. Examples of specialized experience include:

-Providing scientific and analytical support for merit review and award management and oversight processes;

-Preparing analytical and statistical reports of program activities and scientific accomplishments in Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences; and

-Scientific and technical analysis, documentation, and writing in support of reports and presentations regarding the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences research portfolios;

OR

-3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree;

OR

-Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience that meets the total experience requirements.

To qualify at the GS-9 level, you must have at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as:

-Researching and retrieving Social, Behavioral and Economic Science and scientific information from databases and other sources of information;

-Independently preparing routine spreadsheet reports; developing, maintaining and updating program databases; participating in the grant proposal review process; and

-Screening incoming grant proposals for accuracy of information;

OR

-Have a Master's degree in Social, Behavioral or Economic Sciences or a field directly related;

OR

-Have completed at least 2 years of graduate education in an accredited college or university in Social, Behavioral or Economic Sciences or a field directly related;

OR

- Have combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience that meets the total experience requirements.

In addition to the education, basic and specialized experience, applicants must meet the selective factor below. Selective Factors are knowledge, skills, abilities, or special qualifications that are in addition to the minimum requirements in a qualification standard, but are determined to be essential to perform the duties and responsibilities of a particular position. Applicants who do not meet a selective factor are ineligible for further consideration.

Selective Placement Factor: Have you designed and conducted studies that used a variety of analytic techniques, including social science methods and statistical analysis?

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience
