The Public Policy Group and the Immigration Policy Lab at the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences, ETH Zurich, are seeking to appoint a

Lab Director

Our newly established research group, headed by Professor Hangartner, conducts research that employs field and natural experimental methods to quantify the impacts of immigration and integration policies in Europe and other immigrant receiving regions. The goal of the research program is to generate rigorous evidence about what works and what does not when it comes to immigration and integration, and design better policies for immigrants and their host communities. The principal job of the lab director will be to establish, oversee, and coordinate the group’s research objectives and priorities under the supervision of Professor Hangartner. The lab director will provide guidance and supervision to program managers in developing new projects, manage relationships with the affiliated faculty from the Zurich and Stanford branch of the Immigration Policy Lab as well as relevant government agencies and nonprofit organizations, oversee the operating budget, and create a culture and environment of results-based management. Furthermore, she or he will be involved in all aspects of the research including study design, coordinating data collection campaigns, organizing research meetings, and co-author manuscripts for leading peer reviewed journals, white papers, policy briefs, and grant proposals, and disseminating the results to academics, policy makers and the public. The initial appointment will be for one year beginning between August and September 2017, with an expected renewal for more years contingent on satisfactory performance. The ideal candidate will have, at the time of appointment, completed a Ph.D. in an economic or social science program, with a preference for Political Science, Economics, or Sociology. She or he should have experience in coordinating collaborative research projects, and running and analyzing field experiments and/or conducting quasi-experimental program evaluations would be highly useful; knowledge of immigration and integration policy in Europe would also be highly valued. Excellent English writing skills are essential. While all work-related interactions are in English, the ability to operate in French or German is also an asset.
