Assistant Professor of Defense Analysis,
Specializing in Networks, Organizations, and Military Strategy
(AD-1701-03)
Naval Postgraduate School
Monterey, CA

The Department of Defense Analysis at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School
invites applications from candidates for a tenure-track position. Above
all, the department seeks a candidate who can apply the methodologies of
his or her discipline in rigorous and innovative ways to the study of
military and security affairs. Preference will be given for expertise in
network analysis and design thinking (exemplified in the study of networks,
organizations, or strategy). The department’s teaching and research
programs are interdisciplinary, as are its faculty. Candidates from a
broad range of disciplinary backgrounds will be considered. For example
candidates may hold a Ph.D. in anthropology with specialization in complex
human systems; in sociology with specialization in social network analysis;
in business with specializations in strategic management and change
management; in psychology with specialization in small-group dynamics; in
geography with specialization in global information systems; in political
science with specialization in the design of governance systems and
institutions; or other related fields.

Primary duties include: 1) instruction for the Defense Analysis Department,
including courses that build on the department’s methodological expertise
in design thinking, social network analysis, geospatial analysis, and
ethnography; 2) research that supports the department’s two primary
sponsors: US Special Operations Command and the Under Secretary of Defense
for Policy; and 3) supervising thesis work by students called upon to
address the complicated problems that US security personnel and their
allies face in the 21st Century.

NPS is a fully accredited graduate school with students from all U.S.
services, as well as foreign military officers. Our department offers an
M.S. in Defense Analysis. Successful candidates will have a strong research
program and be able to teach at the high level expected by professional
military officers. A completed Ph.D. is strongly preferred, and U.S.
citizenship is required. Candidates in the final phases of completing their
dissertations will also be considered. Salary is highly competitive and
includes a generous locality allowance. Monterey is a short drive south
from the San Francisco Bay area and is ideally situated along the
spectacular central California coast.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. All materials must be
received by October 15th, 2015, and should include a C.V., writing sample,
summary of available teaching evaluations, and three letters of
recommendation. Please address the applications to:

Search Committee Chair
Mail Code DA
